So, Warm Bodies was lots of fun. Although, there was a point where the writer chickened out in order to give things a happy, and I kind of wish he hadn't. I see why he did what he did but... the film would've had more depth if he'd had the guts to follow through. That's okay. It's a nice, light-hearted rom-com with zombies, and I totally dug the literary reference. Well done! I now have to read a zombie book. ;) Oh, we ran into an old friend (Jason E.) who was out on a date. I wish there'd been time to hang out a bit before the film, but we needed to get to our seats. Dane has still got it. It was colder outside post movie than it had been going in, and he gave me his coat. That was super sweet of him. Seventeen years together, and he still does little things like that. It's pretty wonderful. So, very glad I married him.
Enough of the mush. :)
And now my ConDFW schedule.
Friday
5 pm: Autographs
Saturday
12 pm: The Fight of the Century II: Urban Fantasy vs Paranormal Romance!
Urban Fantasy: Stina Leicht (M), Rachel Caine, Larry Atchley, Jr.
Paranormal Romance: Kevin Hosey (M), Dusty Rainbolt, Sabine Starr
Last year, this panel sparked quite a debate and proved that some basic rules were needed. 1) We’re assigning sides for our authors to defend – and perhaps we will actually find out where the line between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance is! 2) You’re not allowed to switch sides until AFTER the panel. 3) You do not talk about Fight Club. Bring your own popcorn.
(For the record, I'm so glad I've got Rachel Caine on my side. ;) Actually, this one looks like tons of fun. Seriously.)
3 pm: Reading
Sunday
1 pm: Why Does Research Matter if You’re Making It Up Anyway?
Panelists: Teresa Patterson (M), Michelle Muenzler, Frances A. May, Ethan Nahte, Stina Leicht
I bet most beginning novelists ask themselves this question when they first start writing. And after they are forced to backtrack to correct something, they realize the answer – If you have a strong foundation, it becomes easier to write using that foundation. Still, it’s better to hear from the voices of experience – and so we bring you our panelists to talk about why research is fundamental to creating a world.
2 pm: Native Mythology – The Rise of Coyote!
Panelists: Mel White (M), Frances A. May, Stina Leicht, J.M. McDermott, Mark Finn
Last year we dealt with Norse Mythology and the rise of Ragnarok. This year we go a little closer to home, and bring in Native American mythology. Listen to our shamans, and they will tell you stories of long ago, when the wolf roamed the land and the trickster coyote was both worshipped and feared.
Enough of the mush. :)
